“Wow, who sent the roses?” Sylvie asked as she peeked into Meredith’s office on Tuesday morning.

The huge arrangement of long-stemmed roses on her desk was hard to ignore, and of course Sylvie would want to know all the details, Meredith realized.

“Just…a client,” Meredith replied. She tried to suppress the smile that came automatically to her lips every time she thought of Adam, but she just couldn’t. The roses had arrived early that morning with a card that said, “Missing you already, Adam.” She had slipped the card in her purse for safekeeping and now glanced at Sylvie, then looked away.

For some reason she felt shy telling anyone about what had been going on between herself and Adam. Even Sylvie. But Sylvie knew her so well by now, the look on Meredith’s face and the gleam in her eyes probably gave everything away. Still, Meredith attempted to change the subject.

“Did I miss anything important at the production meeting this morning?”

With her work on the Everlasting samples and Adam’s account, her boss had excused her from the meeting. Meredith had been grateful.

Sylvie took her usual seat beside Meredith’s drawing table and crossed her long slim legs. “No real news. A tentative production schedule was set for the Everlasting Collection, but I’m sure Frank will fill you in.” Sylvie stared at her in a way that made Meredith realize she wasn’t letting her off the hook. “So is there any connection between you coming in late this morning and the portable greenhouse?”

“Maybe,” Meredith admitted.

“And is this ‘just a client’ the same ‘just a client’ who sent that beautiful sweater set last week?” Sylvie continued.

Meredith’s gaze flew up to meet her friend’s. “Honestly, Sylvie. You should open a detective agency. You’re really good.”

Sylvie shrugged and leaned closer. “It’s Adam Richards, right? He was the one who bought you at the auction, and Jayne said she called you to consult with him down in the showroom last week. I didn’t get to see him at the auction, but Jayne says he’s gorgeous. Why didn’t you tell us that you’re seeing him?”

Meredith sat back, wide-eyed. “For goodness sakes, yes, he did buy me at the auction, but all we did afterward was have coffee, and since then all we’ve done is have dinner. A business dinner,” she added. “Honestly, nothing has happened,” she insisted. But the look on Sylvie’s face made it hard for Meredith to get away with her little white lie. “Well…practically nothing. I mean, nothing happened that most other people would really think was anything…. But of course, since I don’t really date much—I mean, I don’t date at all, actually—I mean, to me it seemed like something. Even though it really was absolutely—”

“Meredith, you’re babbling,” Sylvie gently interrupted. “You really like this guy, don’t you?”

“Yeah…I really do,” Meredith admitted. “And it scares me to death, Sylvie,” she added, looking up at the roses. “He’s just so…so…”

“Perfect?” Sylvie asked.

“He’s too perfect,” Meredith replied with a sigh. “He’s intelligent, kind, considerate… He even told me last night he’s not going to give me any excuses to get away from him.
